Road safety guidelines for concrete pumps

Concrete pump trucks are specialised heavy vehicles and it is important to keep these road safety guidelines in mind when driving on the road:

  • Keep a safe following distance from the vehicles in front of your vehicle in order to stop safely if other vehicles decelerate suddenly. You should allow at least a 3 second count from the vehicle in front.
  • Read road signs and adhere to them.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. It will keep you in your seat so that you have control of your truck if something goes wrong.
  • Slow down in work zones during road works on the road.
  • Be aware of your No-Zone or blind spots. “One third of accidents between large trucks and cars take place in the No-Zone” – Arrive Alive.
  • Make sure your truck is visible at night. Check your lights to make sure they are in working order. Apply enough reflective tape.
  • Keep yourself and others safe during a breakdown. Place objects like road cones in the road so other road users can safely operate around your truck.
  • Keep your truck maintained and check your truck before you drive anywhere to avoid accidents and breakdowns.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take illegal substances before or while you drive your truck. It is illegal, you can go to jail, you can loose your life, you can loose your job and you can kill someone.
  • Be aware of driver fatigue when driving late of night or after a long shift. Look out for symptoms like yawning, slow reactions, feelings of stiffness, heaviness in your eyes, day dreaming and wandering over the center line of the road. Take a break, get some air, walk around for a few minutes and make sure you are completely awake and aware before you drive again.
  • Be the professional on the road. Keep calm in stressful and difficult situations. Be positive and polite.

I think it’s important to make sure that you follow all the road safety guidelines when driving down the road. It can be dangerous if you don’t follow the road signs. I think it’s interesting that they put cones around the pump to give the workers some room. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the feedback Braden 🙂
Yes, we feel strongly about the safety of both the public and our concrete pump crews on the roads and during breakdowns. The more visibility the better. Have a great day.
